Phase 1 · Survey
Online questionnaire design, recruitment, administration and analysis.
Milestones
What this phase covers
- Designing a survey with the workforce so it is meaningful, practical and easy to complete.
- Work with other organisations to make use of relevant available data on the use of physical restraint.
- Promoting participation across Scotland to build a wide picture of current practice and experience.
- Using the findings to identify patterns, strengths and areas for deeper exploration in later phases.

Phase 2 · Appreciative Inquiry
During this phase, we will work closely with five residential child care providers to understand what happens when restraint is successfully avoided. The work will consists of desiging interview questions and focus groups, carry out the interviews and analyse the transrcipts, all the while ensuring the process is ethical.

- Exploring what helps workers successfully avoid physical restraint and what conditions support good practice, involving both staff and children and young people.
- Gathering detailed insight from services making progress towards restraint reduction.
- Producing early learning that feeds directly into practical resources and wider dissemination.

Phase 3 · Resource creation & knowledge dissemination
Knowledge production, sense-making and development of resources, reports and wider dissemination activity.

- Turning the learning from the project into practical resources, reports and sector-facing outputs.
- Supporting sense-making and knowledge sharing so people can follow what has been learned and what is next.
- Making the final outputs easier to use in day-to-day practice and wider sector development.
